American Art Partners Residencies
Delivered by Art Resources in Teaching in conjunction with the Ryan Education Center at the Art Institute of Chicago
Made possible with the support of the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Polk. Bros. Foundation
In June, 2009, thirty Chicago elementary school teachers participated in the American Art Summer Institute at the Art Institute of Chicago. These teachers found opportunities to make deep and meaningful connections between art works and core learning areas. To reinforce and apply the Institute’s objectives, the teachers will receive an A.R.T. in-school artist residency in the Fall semester. During the residency, A.R.T. artists will deliver a unique program which strikes a balance between student curriculum, image discussion, and art appreciation with related hands-on activities during five sessions. Each artist’s curriculum will explore historical and cultural concepts evident in American art and how they reflect the customs and people of the times.
Students will also enjoy field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago to further reinforce their understanding of American art. This field trip includes a full museum experience with a docent-led tour of American art galleries and a studio art activity led by their A.R.T. Artist and assisted by a museum volunteer. For many students this will be their first venture, not only to the Art Institute, but outside of their neighborhood.
