Workshops for Grades K-2
African American Art for Youngsters
Students are introduced to the work of African American artists. Students experiment with color as they create bright collages or paintings.
Latino Art for Youngsters
Younger students explore the life celebrations of a Latino culture through the folk arts and crafts associated with celebration. Students then create their own celebratory objects based on Latino traditions and forms.
Young Artists Workshop
Primary age students explore the tactile aspects of art in this hands-on workshop. They create their own works of art in diverse media under the direction of an A.R.T. Artist.
Workshops for Grades 3-8
Art and Science Workshop
Students will be introduced to artists who explore the scientific process. Hands-on activities will tie in to the related areas which art and science share, such as observation, problem solving, color and light.
Chicago Architecture
Students learn about how Chicago evolved from a frontier town on Lake Michigan to a major urban center.
Da Vinci and Flight
Leonardo Da Vinci was not only an artist, but also a scholar in aeronautics. After exploring Da VinciÕs models of early aircrafts, students create their own models of flying machines.
Mapmaking Workshop
Linking naturally with the social studies, science and math curricula, this workshop examines the art of mapmaking. Maps from various cultures and historical periods are explored.

Students explore the themes and symbols that are important to their school as the A.R.T. Artist introduces them to banner design.
Tetrahedron Kites
Taking geometry to the sky, this course teaches students about geometric forms and their uses in art and architecture.
3-D Stick Weaving
Students explore the interactive nature of patterns as they weave straws to create a 3-D sculpture. Students create individual components of a large class sculpture and develop strategies to weave the joints of their individual pieces together to create a collaborative sculpture.
African American Artists
Students are introduced to the work of artists whose narrative paintings chronicle significant events in African American history.
African Maskmaking
Students learn about the tradition of African maskmaking as they study the symbols and meanings of different types of masks from African cultures.
African Tie-Dye
Students are introduced to the history and tradition of tie-dye fabric design and its role in West African culture.
Las Calaveras Prints of Mexico
Calaveras are skeletons that depict the activity of daily life and relate to Ancient Mezzo American Art. Students create their own interpretations of calaveras prints.
Caribbean Art and Culture
Students are introduced to the art of Caribbean culture. They study the painting and sculptural traditions of a Caribbean nation as they learn about shape, symmetry, texture and pattern. They then create artwork inspired by the culture they explore.
Chinese Scrolls
Using special brushes, traditional rice papers and the techniques of Sumi-e, students create personal ink scroll paintings.
Clay Stamps of Ancient Mexico
Students examine the origin and uses of clay stamps in ancient Mexican culture. Students create their own hand-carved clay stamps to decorate cloth.
Day of the Dead
Students learn about Dia de los Muertos and create objects traditionally used in this Mexican celebration. The finished projects are then combined to form a small public display or ofrenda.
Egyptian Artifacts
Students explore the art found in the tombs of ancient Egypt and create their own Egyptian-inspired artwork.
Fables of the Middle East
Students are introduced to animal fables told by jackals Kalila and Dimna and to the Middle Eastern miniature narrative painting tradition.
Folk Arts of Mexico
Students explore the life celebrations of Mexico through the folk arts and crafts associated with various celebrations, both ancient and contemporary. Students create folk art representations that symbolize the celebration they studied.
Gold of Africa
Students are taken on an exploration of the traditional attire of the kings and queens of Africa, comparing the symbolic meanings of royalty and royal symbols to those from Western culture.
