ÒKay was very conscientious and very positive about the students she worked with. She knew each one individually, and she understood why each child made the art he or she did. Kay was very outgoing and always made sure to connect to the students personally.Ó

Schubert School Assistant Principal, Basia Pacyniak

To make a pledge to support residencies at Schubert School in KayÕs honor,
please contact Maureen Mizwicki in the A.R.T. development office at 312.788.3373 x17.

In January 2008, A.R.T. lost long-time Board member Kay Baran. KayÕs twenty years of service and support to A.R.T. included volunteering for a number of years at Franz Peter Schubert Elementary School on the cityÕs northwest side. At Schubert, a Chicago Public School with a high percentage of Hispanic and low income students, Kay assisted A.R.T. Artists in the classroom with residencies and also helped prepare displays of student artwork both in the classroom and at school-wide fairs. At times, Kay even purchased extra materials to ensure exhibitions looked their best.

In appreciation for all of KayÕs enthusiastic support over the years, a six-session Art and Math residency was delivered to the students of Schubert School during the spring 2008 semester. A.R.T. Staff Artist Kaja Overstreet delivered the residency reaching four classrooms at the school. Students applied concepts in art and math to drawing, prints, and sculptures. The artwork created in the residency was then featured in a culminating exhibit at the school in May 2008. Donations made by KayÕs family, friends, fellow A.R.T. Board members and ChairmanÕs Council members funded the residency.
